David Smith came to Stony Brook in 1966 and (with D. Tycko) established the computer science department in 1970. While at Stony Brook his publications included combinational switching functions, shift register sequences, experimental parallel computer & chip architectures, hardware description languages, and hardware synthesis.
He is the author of the text:
"Verilog styles for Synthesis of Digital Systems",
(Prentice-Hall 2000).
Now retired, he spends part of his time painting in oils (Gallery North wet paint festival 2005, 1st place, oils, Brookhaven arts council juried art show, 2005, "Long Island Continent", L..I. museum, Aug 22 - Sept 11, 2005.
