Access to the Department Photocopiers

Q. What do I need to know about using the copier?

A. The copier on the first floor has access control and usage accounting enabled. There is no "quota", just accounting ...

To use the copier:

  1. Acquire a copy card or PIN number. Faculty should see the
undergraduate secretary for this, students should see the graduate
    secretary.
  2. A card-swipe/keypad input device is mounted to the left of the
copier as you stand in front at the copier control panel.
  3. On the copier LCD panel is an image of a mag-card and arrow (and
    international insert card message)
  4. Swipe your card or enter your PIN number (and press the "enter"
button) on the card-swipe/keypad input device mounted on the wall.
  5. If your card/PIN is valid then the LCD control panel of the
copier will display all the typical copying options.
  6. When you are done hit the "clear" button on the card-swipe/keypad
input device to exit the copier.
  7. The international "Insert Card" image will reappear on the copier
    LCD panel.

Who gets a card ?:

Faculty should get two cards: One for personal/research use and one for all course (and all courses you teach) copying.

Students can pay a $10 deposit (refunded when you return 100% of the copy card, in one piece, to the dept).

Is there any quota ?:

None. But we are trying to reduce unnecessary copying/abuse of the copier so someone will be looking at the resulting data.

Do TA's get a card ?:

No, see the course professor to make copies for a course.

Do the cards expire ?:

No but you cannot pass them on to your children or new students. We expect student cards to be returned when you graduate. Collect your $10 and run.

Aren't people just going to abuse some other copier?:

Sure, but the 2nd floor copier will be fitted with a similar device so it's not going to be that copier.
