Computer Science Dial Up (PPP access)
Q. How do I obtain PPP dialup access to the Computer Science Department?
Important Note: Dialin is not enabled
by default. You have to send email to root
to enable it.
General Information
You have been assigned an individual IP address
for dialup to the department. Dialup accounts are subject to the same policies as your department
account itself.
In addition to your departmental dialup account, all members of the department
are eligible for a campus dialup account. Please see the campus
dialup page for information on applying for and accessing that account.
INFORMATION FOR ALL USERS Your modem settings
should be 8,N,1. For help in setting up your modem as well as
your PPP connection see this online chapter from the O'Reilly
book on PPP.
SETUP INSTRUCTIONS FOR
COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
- I can reach hosts within the department
but not beyond. My connection has always behaved this way.
In Windows (any version), verify that you have checked "Use default
gateway on remote network". In Unix, verify that you have a default
route set to 130.245.1.10.
- I can reach hosts within the department
but not beyond. It always worked right before.
First, go back to question #1 and verify your settings are correct.
Next, from any department host, issue "telnet sparky.ic.sunysb.edu".
If you get back "Connected to sparky.ic.sunysb.edu" (you don't need
to have an account there nor to make a full connection) then the campus
connection to the internet is down and you can try again in a little
while. If you get nothing back, repeat the experiment with "telnet www.sunysb.edu".
If neither produces any response, send mail to root@cs.sunysb.edu giving
full details, including day, time, whether you have had this problem
previously, exactly what you tried and any error messages that were
returned.
- The department connection to sparky is
fine, but I still can't get there from my home connection. My laptop
works fine [in the dept | at my job | at some other place].
If you have used this computer previously with an ethernet connection
or some other dialup connection you may have some stored routing information
which is not accurate for this connection. Go back and check the settings
in question #1, otherwise you will need to read up on the Microsoft
"route" command and its use (beyond the scope of this document).
- I entered all my routing information
using the Linux GUI interface, but it still doesn't work.
In order for changes to take affect, you have to reboot your computer.
- After a few hours it seems like my connection always drops.
There is a 4 hour session limit for dialins.
