CS Students and Faculty are Ready to Mentor Students for CodeLI.org and kidOYO

The Department of Computer Science (CS) is excited to begin a learning partnership with NoizIvy.org. CS students and faculty will mentor students at CodeLI.org’s CoderDojo Long Island workshops and kidOYO summer camps.

Founded in 2012, CodeLI.org is a non-profit effort focused on teaching children 7-17 years old computer programming and computer skills. At a Coder Dojo LI event kids learn to code, develop websites, create apps, and more. Monthly workshops will take place in the Department of Computer Science with CS faculty, undergraduate and graduate students on hand to help facilitate learning. Week-long summer camps, by KidOYO, will also take place in the Department of Computer Science during July and August of this year.

“The Department of Computer Science is very happy to be able to assist NoizIvy.org by providing space and mentors,” according to Department Chairman Ari Kaufman. Dr. Kaufman adds, “An early start in computer science will hopefully lead to successful careers as Computer Scientists for some of the participants.”

Workshops will take place in the current CS building at Stony Brook but by the end of 2014, students will meet in the new 70,000 sq ft CS building currently under construction. The new CS building boasts 27,000 sq ft of research space and is home to the following innovative centers: National Security Institute, Center for Mobile Computing, Center for Dynamic Data Analytics, Center for Smart Energy, and Center for Visual Computing.

The first CoderLI.org event will be held in the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University on June 14th from 10a-1p. “We are excited to be part of the Stony Brook community. With the new workshop location, we’ll be able to introduce more students to the world of technology and how fun learning can be,” says Melora Loffreto who founded CodeLI.org with her husband, Devon.

Registration information for the June 14th event can be found here and information on the kidOYO summer camp program is available here. If you are interested in becoming a mentor at either the June event or at summer camp, please visit Mentor Signup to register.
