- From Outlook 2007 personal folders
- From Outlook 2010 personal folders
- From Thunderbird
- From pine (Using Thunderbird)
- If your pine data is on a remote Unix machine, use SSH (SFTP) to copy them to your machine where Thunderbird is installed.
- If you have your pine data on the same machine just copy the below files in your Thunderbird profile described below.
- Pine stores its email folders as follows, Lookup for these folders in your Home Directory of Unix/ Linux computer.
- mailbox (This is your Inbox)
- mail\saved-messages
- mail\sent-mail
- Copy the files which contain your messages from Pine to your Thunderbird profile directory as below.
- From Pine (Using Pine)
- Follow the instructions to setup your computer science email account using Connecting to Exchange Using Pine.
- Start pine on the compute servers and login to the Exchange Server.
- Go to Pine's MAIN MENU. You can go to the MAIN MENU from most Pine screens by pressing 'M'. You should see something like this:
- Press “L” to view the Folder List and Browse to the Folder you want to migrate the emails from.
- In order to move “Sent-Mail” to Microsoft Exchange, go to Mail->sent-mail.
- Select All messages that you would like to migrate. For example, to enter selection criteria, press “;” and for all messages, press “A”.
- Once the messages have been selected, press “A” to apply an Action on the selected messages, followed by “S” to save them to a different folder.
- Press “^T” to select the destination folder, followed by the folder you want to save it to. For example, the screenshot shows “Sent Items” as been selected.
- Press Enter twice.
- When changing folders again, you will be prompted to expunge the previously moved messages. We recommend you do not expunge, until you have verified that all messages have been correctly migrated.
- From Unix Webmail
- Open Outlook, Go to Tools and select "Account Settings" Click New
- Check "Manually configure server settings or additional server types" and click Next
- Select "Internet E-Mail" and click Next
- Enter the following information
- Full Name: First + Last Name
- e-mail address: username@cs.sunysb.edu
- Account Type: IMAP
- Incoming mail server: popmail.cs.sunysb.edu
- Outgoing Mail: smtpmail.cs.sunysb.edu
- Username: Unix Account Username
- Click "More Settings..." Select the "Advanced Tab"
Under the "Use the following type of encrypted connection:" Select "SSL" The port will change to 993.
- Click Test Account Settings to check if the settings were correct and then click Close.
Click Next and then click Finish.
- You should now be able to see all emails from Unix Server synchronized as below.
If you had additional folders created in WebMail and wish to import them, then follow the below instructions else directly skip to Step 11 - Right click on the email account and select IMAP Folders
- From the folder list query using the appropriate name of folder you wish to import and click on subscribe.
- You should now be able to see all the folders you subscribed as shown below.
- Now configure your Computer Science Exchange account by following the instructions at Connecting to Exchange Using Outlook
- Now you will be able to see your UNIX account and new exchange account together in Outlook.
- You can select all the mails from your UNIX account folders that you wish to move to exchange and then from the right click menu select 'Move to Folder'
- Select the destination folder under your Exchange Mail box as shown below
- You should now be able to see all your selected mails moved to the Exchange mailbox.
- Similarly you can also drag and drop selected mails from your old mailbox to the new exchange mailbox.
- Once done with moving all the data from UNIX account folders to exchange, you can remove the UNIX account from Tools-> Account Settings -> Select Account -> Remove Account.
Migrating your Outlook Emails to Stony Brook Computer Science Microsoft Exchange Server
Step1. Configure your Computer Science Exchange account by following the instructions at "Connecting to Exchange Using Outlook"
Step2. Now you will be able to see your old account and new account together in Outlook.
Step 3. You can select all the mails from your old account folders that you wish to move to exchange and then from the right click menu select Move To Folder

Step4. Select the destination folder under your Exchange Mail box as shown below

Step5. You should now be able to see all your selected mails moved to the Exchange mailbox.

Step6. Similarly you can also drag and drop selected mails from your old mailbox to the new exchange mailbox.
Migrating your Outlook 2010 Emails to Stony Brook Computer Science Microsoft Exchange Server
Step 1: Configure your Computer Science Exchange account by following the instructions at "Connecting to Exchange Using Outlook 2010"
Step 2: You can select all the mails from your old account folders that you wish to move to exchange and then from the right click menu select Move -> Copy To Folder.

Step 3: Select the destination folder under your Exchange Mail box as shown below

Step 4: You should now be able to see all your selected mails moved to the Exchange mailbox.
Migrating your existing Thunderbird Emails to Microsoft Exchange
Step1. Setup your Computer Science Microsoft Exchange account with Thunderbird by following the steps from "Connecting to Exchange Using Thunderbird"
Step2. Now you will be able to see your old account and new account together in Thunderbird.
Step3. You can select all the mails from your old account folders that you wish to move to exchange and then from the right click menu select Move To -> (you exchange account) -> Destination folder, you wish to move these emails in.

Step4. You should be able to see all the emails moved into the Destination folder. For our example the Inbox folder as shown below:

You can even drag and drop selected emails from your old account folder to any folder under your exchange account.

Migrating your Pine Emails to Stony Brook Computer Science Microsoft Exchange Server
Install Mozilla Thunderbird and follow the instructions to setup your computer science email account using “Connecting to Exchange Using Thunderbird”.
Once your account is correctly setup in Thunderbird, Close Thunderbird and follow the below instructions.
The thunderbird profile by default is in the below path (For Windows Vista and Windows 7):
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<default_profile>\Mail\Local Folders
Step1. Now start Thunderbird, You should be able to see the mail files imported in the Local Folders directory in Thunderbird.

Step2. Click on the mailbox folder under Local Folders, this should show up all your mails from Pine Inbox.
Step3. Now select all messages that you would like to move to exchange, then from the right click menu select Move To -> (you exchange account) -> Inbox/ Any folder you wish to move these emails in.

Step4. You should now see the emails you just move in the Inbox folder of your exchange account.

Step5. Similarly you can move your sent-mails and other saved emails from pine to Exchange.
