WHERE TO GET HELP

WREQ:

  1. Web based problem reporting tool
  2. All technical staff members get a copy
  3. Users can track request
  4. If no web access, send email to wreq.
  5. Always follow up a conversation with wreq request.
  6. Only in case of problem with WREQ, mail to root.

DEPARTMENT FACILITIES

Purpose of Rules, Policies and Quotas

Purpose of rules is to ensure smooth use of resources for all, and to not waste Research $$. We are a research department - most resources paid for out of research dollars - wasted resources mean less dollars for research and student support. Success of research is success for all department members. Good reputation will help in future job prospects for you. Purpose of quotas is to help us manage resources. We will always work with you if you need more resources to do your department related work. When in doubt, ASK!

Accounts

  1. Policies - no sharing, cheating, hacking, expiration.
  2. Choose a good password - Accounts with bad passwords are turned off.
  3. Quota - presently 2GB.
  4. Get an IC account (SINC site).
  5. Get a free email account (hotmail, gmail) and use it for personal business.
  6. Upon graduation we will provide an alumni address which will forward to account of your choosing.

Publishing on WWW

  1. Will receive an email in next couple of weeks with login and password, save that email!
  2. Three Server system:
    • intrawww.cs.sunysb.edu for development
    • editwww.cs.sunysb.edu for publishing
    • www.cs.sunysb.edu for browsing

  3. Please use only for education and research
  4. Submit wreq request if you need more quota

Printing

  1. Primary graduate printers are publaser1 and publaser1d located in Graduate PC lab (room 1239)
  2. No quota, but there is accounting
  3. No books, lengthy online resources, personal stuff - will charge for resources (we do log)
  4. Don't waste resources paid for by Department
  5. Accepts only Postscript - see FAQ
  6. See FAQ for names and locations
  7. Copy cards for Xerox machine available from Cynthia, $10 non-refundable fee

Email spam control

  1. Students are in the system by default
  2. No email is ever dropped or refused
  3. Digest sent out 2X a day with instructions on retrieval
  4. Can opt out or opt back in through SSO website

CEWIT

  1. Current Information is located at http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~cewit
  2. Cluster for High compute research (300 node, 450 processor cluster)
  3. Use your UNIX username and password to access the cluster
  4. Login information can be found on the website

Wireless access

  1. Available through building

Dialup (33.6 Kps pool)

TA INFORMATION

  1. Don't hold hours in your office (want to make sure students or professor can find you)
  2. TA room 2110, get combo from Cynthia and give her your hours
  3. Blackboard (Online course management tool - http://blackboard.sunysb.edu)
  4. Absolutely no food or drink in any lab or office - use grad lounge
