Samir Das was educated at Jadavpur University in Kolkata (Calcutta) and Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He also worked briefly in Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata (Calcutta). Prior to Stony Brook, Das was a faculty member in Computer Science at the University of Texas at San Antonio and then in Computer Engineering at University of Cincinnati.
Samir R. Das directs "Wireless Networking and Simulation Lab" (or WINGS lab), which holds the following projects:
- Understanding Traffic Dynamics in Cellular Data Networks and Applications to Resource Management
- Making Smarphone Applications more User Adaptive and Network Friendly
- Enabling smartphones to perform Spectrum Sensing in TV Whitespace (details coming up)
- Understanding redundancy in network traffic from smartphone applications. (details coming up)

Samir Das is a recipient of the Best Paper Award, ACM MobiSys 2007 (for MobiSteer), IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Visitor, 2001-2003, and NSF Faculty Early CAREER Award, 1998.
