How to volunteer to host

If you want to host a Donut Hour, send email to the Donut Admin at donut@cs.sunysb.edu. Even if all the slots are filled, you can always share a slot.

Suggested guidlines for hosts

  1. If for some reason you cannot host the donut hour after signing up for it, please inform the Donut Admin as soon as possible, so that (s)he has time to make alternative arrangements. Avoid this as far as possible in the first place. It is not easy to make alternative arrangements.
  2. Hosting in absentia defeats the purpose of hosting. This should be reverted to only if unavoidable. Inform the Donut Admin about this. It is likely that (s)he would rather make alternative arrangement.
  3. Please be on time. Getting the food even 10 minutes late could spoil the show. If you are getting something hot (temperature), plan to get it at least 45 minutes before schedule to avoid last minute rush. It is ok if things are not piping hot. If you are getting things that can be brought in advance, it is better to get them at morning.
  4. Once you get the food, keep the drinks in the graduate lounge refridgerator to chill. If you don't know the combination, ask someone to let you in for this purpose, or simply send an email to the Donut Admin for help.
  5. Average attendance is about 50. Be prepared for more people if you are getting something exotic.
  6. If you are getting donuts *only*, 5 packs should be sufficient, one of which can be donut holes. A big bag of potato chips or Nachos provides variety. A pack of cookies also does the same. Some Indians don't eat eggs, hence it would be better if you get some eggless cookies like Chips Ahoy (Blue one), Nutter Butter or any cream wafers.
  7. As people have got used to seeing a variety of food in Donut Hour, donuts are not as popular these days. But they are quick to get. Nearest place is Dunkin Donuts which is right across the Stony Brook train station.
  8. You are encouraged to get something from your native cuisine.
  9. You are discouraged to get things that have a potential to create a mess, are difficult to serve, are likely to spill.
  10. It is not expected that you would cook anything yourself for donut hour. However, if you would like to, you are welcome to do it and we would highly appreciate your creativity and enthusiasm.
  11. 8 litres of drinks should be sufficient. Milk is not popular. Coca cola classic and Orange Juice are amoungst the more popular drinks.
  12. Some paper napkins, paper plates, cups, knifes, forks, spoons etc. may be needed depending on what you are getting.
  13. Please do some cleaning after the donut hour gets over. Throw the garbage in the bins. Take away left overs. Reasonable left overs can also be left in the grad lounge for consumption/use by graduate students. Wipe the tables with paper towel if there has been some spilling.
