Our local expert Shweta Jain will give two lectures for my class CSE590 on TinyOS and programming in sensor networks on Tuesday and Thursday (oct 31st and nov 2nd), 12:50pm-2:10pm @ Social Behavior Science S218. Anyone is welcome to attend the lectures. Also feel free to disseminate the announcement to people who may be interested. Jie Title: TinyOS, programming in sensor networks, and revolutionary applications Location & time: Tuesday and Thursday (oct 31st and nov 2nd), 12:50pm-2:10pm @ Social Behavior Science S218. Abstract: TinyOS is an operating system for tiny devices that we call motes. The main aim for this talk is to motivate students to learn and use these tiny devices to develop cool applications and research test-beds. I will introduce some of the many cool applications that have been developed in the past to get everyone excited. Once you have gained the appetite to learn more, I will introduce you to the programming aspect of TinyOS and nesC. Day 1 will focus on the basics, like how to read data from sensors, blink LEDs and communicate with the PC. Day 2 will focus on advanced topics like power management. For those who are intimidated by the word "test-bed", TinyOS can also be used to simulate large scale sensor networks right on your desktop computer, and the same code can then be uploaded on these tiny devices on publicly available test-beds in other universities as well as the one that will soon come into existence in our own department. We will talk about the simulation aspect and I will share my experience on Day 2. Shweta
