Designing the User Interface: A Case Study of Neuroradiology

Practicing neuro-radiologists make diagnoses by observing abnormalities in CT and MR images. Classically, CT and MR images are printed on 11"x17" film which is then placed on a bright light-box. Most cases involve at least four sheets of film and some may involve at least 8 such sheets (60-100 images).

Can light-boxes be replaced by computer monitors for use in clinical practice? What user-interface features are needed to capture the standard functionalities provided by a light-box and at the same time improve efficiency by appropriate use of software, computation and display technologies? Funding is available for one or more PhD students to help find answers to these questions.
