Welcome
Now in its sixth year, the Stony Brook University Game Programming Competition is an opportunity for our student game developers to work in teams to create original games and then together, enjoy their presentation. Over the years the contest has been judged by industry professionals from companies like Gameloft, GameLab, Vicarious Visions, Microsoft, Powerhead Games, and more. Students who enter games in the contest have typically taken CSE 380, Computer Game Programming and/or CSE 381, Advanced Game Programming. The contest is held each May.
Contest Rules
All games entered in the contest must meet the following requirements:
- All those working on the entered project must be current Stony Brook University students at the time of the contest. These students need not be Computer Science majors.
- All entered games must be completely original in content except for music. This means all artwork, sound effects, and programming must be created by the team themselves. The exception to this is the use of a game engine. Game engines like Torque may be used, but must be approved by the contest coordinator.
- Games should be completely original. MODs are not allowed.
- Any game entered in the contest must not have been entered in a past years' contest.
Judging
Aside from just having fun, the point of the contest is to pick a winner for each year. Winners get their names engraved on the competition's plaque, and sometimes additional goodies. Judging is done by a panel of game industry professionals and is based on their own individual criteria for what makes a game great.
