CSE 532 -- Advanced Database Systems
Fall 2001
Important New Announcements
- The final exam is on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. in
the regular class room, Javits 109. Please use alternate-row
seating and please be prepared to change your seat if need be. Write your name
on each sheet of paper you hand in. The exam will be closed-book and
closed-notes. It will also be comprehensive but it
will emphasize the material we covered since the midterm. This means
Chapters 16, 21, 22, 23, and 24 and the corresponding material from the lecture
notes. Several of these chapters require that you have a good background in
database normalization theory, physical database design, and transaction
management (concurrency control and crash recovery), topics that
should be familiar to you from having taken CSE 305 or its equivalent.
The relevant chapters in the text are Chapters 7-15 and 18-20 (but at least
read Chapters 8,11, 14, 15, and 20).

- The midterm exam is on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 during regular class
time (5:30-6:50) in the regular classroom (Javits 109). Please use
alternate-row seating and please be prepared to change your seat if need be.
Write your name on each sheet of paper you hand in. You can write your answers
in pencil, but in that case, we will be unable to regrade any portion of your
exam. So use a pen if you want to keep that option open. The exam will be
closed-book and closed-notes and will cover all lecture material up to and
including the lecture of Monday, October 22, 2001. You are responsible for
the following reading assignments and corresponding lecture-notes material, all
of which is fair game for the midterm: Chapters 1-5, 17 (except 17.4-17.5),
25, and whatever parts of 22 we cover in class leading up to the midterm.
The exam will consist of approximately three questions ("concept" questions,
not short-answer questions).
