Homework reference solutions posted

In a break with my normal practice, I have temporarily posted reference solutions for the homework and programming project on the Assignments page. These documents will be removed shortly after the final exam.


Final exam is Thursday, May 10

The final exam is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, from 5:15–7:45 PM in CS 2120. Full details, including a practice exam, can be found on the Exams page. Update: sample solutions have been posted.

I will hold an exam review on the last day of class (Thursday, May 3).


Extra Credit CodeLab assignment posted

An extra-credit CodeLab assignment has been posted on the Turing's Craft Web site. These problems are due by 11:59 PM on Friday, May 4. UPDATE: Skip the "Big Words" exercise!


Programming Project posted; due Friday, 5/4

The programming project is now available from the Assignments page. It guides you through writing a simple GUI application. It is due (through Blackboard) by 11:59 PM on Friday, May 4.


CodeLab 5 posted; due Friday, 4/20

CodeLab exercise set 5 (file I/O and exceptions) has been posted on the Turingscraft Web site. These exercises are due by 11:59 PM on Friday, April 20.


Homework 4 posted; due Monday, 4/23

Homework 4 is now available from the Assignments page. It is due (through Blackboard) by 11:59 PM on Monday, April 23.


Homework 3 posted; due Tuesday, 4/10

Homework 3 is now available from the Assignments page. It is due by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, April 10; use Blackboard to submit your work.


REMINDER: Midterm 2 is Thursday, March 29!

Midterm 2 will be computer-based, via CodeLab. Full information is available on the Exams page.


CodeLab 4 posted; due 3/30

CodeLab 4 (arrays, ArrayLists, and inheritance) is now available from the Turing's Craft Web site. The exercises are due by 11:59 PM on Friday, March 30. Use these exercises to study for Midterm 2.


TA office hours change for Tuesday, 3/13

Due to a schedule conflict, Taner will hold office hours Tuesday, 3/13, from 1–2 PM, instead of 11:30–1 as normal. Sorry for the late notice.


Homework 2 posted

Homework 2 is now available from the Assignments page. It is due (via Blackboard) by 11:59 PM on Friday, March 16.


REMINDER: No lecture on Thursday

As a reminder, I will be out of town until Monday. ISE 208 will not meet on Thursday, March 1.


CodeLab 3 posted; Homework 2 to follow

CodeLab 3 is due by 11:59 PM on Monday, March 12.

Homework 2 is slightly delayed. It will be posted by Thursday evening.


More Java Resources

If you'd like some additional explanations of basic Java concepts, please check out the tutorial series by "The New Boston" on YouTube.

To practice your skills, try the review exercises at the end of each chapter in the textbook. You can find solutions to some of those exercises at the textbook's companion Web site.


New TA Office Hours

Sean (the graduate TA for the class) has graciously offered to hold weekly office hours. He will be available in CS 1205 on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10–11 AM. You are encouraged to visit him if you want extra assistance with the course material.


CodeLab 2 EXTENDED to Monday, February 27

Due to the midterm exam, as announced in class, CodeLab 2's due date is extended until 11:59 PM on Monday, February 27.


No TA office hours Tuesday, February 21

Due to a schedule conflict, Taner will not hold office hours tomorrow (2/12). He will resume his normal office hours on Thursday.

CodeLab 2 posted

CodeLab 2 has been posted on the Turing's Craft Web site. It is due by 11:59 PM on Monday, February 27 Friday, February 24 (this deadline may be extended due to Midterm 1).


Homework 1 and CodeLab 1 posted

Homework 1 is now available from the Assignments page. It is due (through Blackboard) by 11:59 PM on Wednesday, February 15.

Homework 1 includes sign-up instructions for CodeLab. CodeLab problem set 1 has also been posted. It is available from the www.turingscraft.com Web site, and is due by 11:59 PM on Friday, February 10. Please note that CodeLab has a $25.00 registration fee.


Online Java Resource: How to Think Like a Computer Scientist

If you're looking for a very basic introduction to Java concepts, you may want to take a look at Think Java, available from Green Tea Press. The book was written for AP Java students, and it presents basic Java in a very simple, easy-to-read format.


Important Dates

• February 23: Midterm 1 (in class)
• March 1: No class (instructor will be out of town)
• March 29: Midterm 2 (in class)
• April 2–6: NO CLASS (Spring Break)
• May 10: Final Exam (5:15–7:45 PM, location TBA)


Academic Dishonesty Form

As noted in the syllabus, students are required to turn in a signed copy of the ISE 208 Academic Dishonesty Form before their assignments will be graded. Please download a copy of the form from the link above and submit it to the instructor before the end of lecture on Thursday, February 2.
